Recently, Tony Levin was at Dreamland, recording bass for Anjani Thomas!JERRY MAROTTA is an anomaly. A peculiar Picasso painting, a cubist conundrum, bursting onto the music scene with no explanation and no apology. You know him from his seismic tribal tones with Peter Gabriel in the 70's and 80's, his intricate percussive rhythms with artists like Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, and Ani Difranco in the 90's, several years of cavernous calliope conniptions with Marotta Griegraber, California Guitar Trio and The Tony Levin Band, and present work with English goth legend Peter Murphy, French pop star Axelle Red, and American singer-songwriter Anjani Thomas. But that doesn't even scratch the surface. Jerry is also a fantastic singer, producer, arranger, and dabbler in many other instruments like guitar, saxophone, and keyboards as well. He's also recently taken over a phenomenal recording facility called ...DREAMLAND RECORDING STUDIOS. www.dreamlandrecording.com Jerry has produced records for Larry Gowan, Kristen Hall, Barbara Kessler, Ellis Paul, Jenny Bird, Pam Golden, Andy Caine, Gabriella Schaaf and can be heard every year with his brother Rick playing drums on the season finale of the hit TV show Survivor.Drummer/Producer:Jerry Marotta has recorded and performed with Peter Gabriel, The Indigo Girls, Hall and Oates, Tears For Fears, Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, 10,000 Maniacs, Suzanne Vega, Sarah McLachlan, Phil Keaggy, and Joan Armatrading to name only a few. Through his extensive touring experience and performances on hundreds of albums Jerry has worked with many of the greatest producers in the world.Jerry now carries his experiences into his own career as a producer. All the skills he brings to studio sessions as a performer are now combined with album production. There are very few styles of music or personalities that he has not worked with! Jerry's producer credits now include Kristin Hall, Larry Gowan, Andrew Caine, Pam Goldin, Gabriella Schaaf, Barbara Kessler, and Ellis Paul. Jerry also contributed the production of two tracks to the Indigo Girls' 1200 Curfews album.Word is getting out about Jerry Marotta's availability as a producer. biography
Jerry was born in Cleveland, Ohio. At the age of five his family moved to Harrison, NY in Westchester county. In the 4th grade he started taking clarinet lessons. In the very first report card that year, his music teacher wrote Jerry shows absolutely no interest in the clarinet! He switched over to saxophone with only a little more success. Ironically it was that same year that Jerry's brother Rick brought home the drum kit that would change both their lives for good. Cut to Jerry graduating from Harrison High in the summer of 1973 (a year early) and taking his final exams on the road with him. Jerry's brother Rick had done a record with a group called Arthur, Hurley and Gotlieb for Columbia and their single had just broken the top 40.They were in need of a drummer and Jerry got the call.In 1975 Jerry auditioned for a Woodstock based group called Orleans and got the job. Soon afterwards he found himself in L.A. recording the Waking and Dreaming record, played on his first hit Still The One and on the road, with Orleans, supporting Jackson Browne. Orleans founding member, John Hall, left the band in the summer of 1977 and as the band took time to decide what their next move would be Jerry flew to London and started working with ex.Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel. For the next ten years Jerry divided his time between recording and touring with Peter Gabriel, Daryl Hall and John Oates, Tears for Fears, Orleans, Joan Armatrading, Paul McCartney, and countless others. In 1986 Jerry started his own band Island Of Men moved From New York City to Woodstock NY, put together his studio JERSVILLE STUDIOS and began producing recordings for his band and others.2011:Jerry is currently dividing his time between recording and touring with Linda Eder and managing myriad projects at DREAMLAND and JERSVILLE.Jerry has produced records for Kristen Hall, Barbara Kessler, Ellis Paul, Jenny Bird, Pam Golden, Andy Caine, Gabriella Schaaf and can be heard every year with his brother Rick playing drums on the season finale of the hit TV show Survivor.Drummer/Producer:Jerry Marotta has recorded and toured with Peter Gabriel, The Indigo Girls, Hall and Oates, Tears For Fears, Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, 10,000 Maniacs, Suzanne Vega and Joan Armatrading to name only a few. Produced by David Baron at Dreamland...www.youtube.com___________________Jerry has been performing and recording with Linda Eder...""First let me say I'm a big Linda Eder fan have been since I worked with her on IT'S TIME. Back then, my participation involved a three-hour session that was it. For SOUNDTRACK, I was fortunate enough to have spent the better part of two weeks working together. In my career, I've been lucky enough to have worked with some amazing people Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello but I have to say, no one comes close when it comes to vocal chops and I mean that. Linda has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard. I can't describe to you the feeling of sitting behind my drum kit with headphones on, counting off a tune and hearing Linda's voice kick in at the verse. It's exhilarating, to say the least. She never ever ceases to inspire me, both as a performer/musician and as a human being, on stage and off. I've had the good fortune to have been out playing live shows with her, and I've never once seen her be anything but totally positive and completely in command. I admire and respect her in every conceivable way if I could just get her to marry me!!!The first great moment for me was getting the phone call asking me if I'd like to play drums on the new Linda Eder record. That call came to me from my good friend and one of the best producers I've ever worked with... Peter Collins. What can you say about a guy who's done records with Rush, Alice Cooper, Jon Bon Jovi, and the Indigo Girls, just to name a few. This guy's talent transcends genres and musical styles. He's a true visionary a Svengali. My first thought was, 'Maybe Linda's going to make a different kind of record maybe more like Alice Cooper!!' Come to think of it, that would be a great idea for a duet in the future Linda and Alice!! Honestly, I was totally transfixed throughout the entire recording process I was grateful for every moment tape was rolling. Most of the time, the singer is not really putting it all out there during the basic tracking. With Linda, you get 110% on every run through pushing the band further and further on every take. That's rare. Also, with such a powerful group of musicians, Billy Stein, Ben Butler, Lonnie Plaxico, Peter White and myself, many singers would be intimidated. Linda went toe to toe with each and every one of us and with the group as a whole. She has an amazing way of making you feel like your working with her, not for her. That's a rare quality and one I appreciate.I have to say I love every song on the record. Some highlights for me were 'Falling Slowly,' such a fascinating song 'Can't Help Falling In Love,' one of the best songs every written in my opinion 'Accidentally In Love,' a great call. I had never heard the song before but I feel it's a highlight on the recording. 'Theme From Valley Of The Dolls' was a brave undertaking. Singing a song that was made famous by Dionne Warwick is a bold move, to say the least. How could anyone even come close to her original performance? Not many people could pull that off. In my opinion, Linda really stepped up!! She always seems to, no matter what we do. In sound checks for the live show, we were jamming on the Peter Gabriel song, 'In Your Eyes,' and Linda was just 'ripping it up,' as they say. I think that song may see the light of day in a live show sometime soon." http://thevoice.lindaeder.com
press
JERRY MAROTTA PRESS"Jerry Marotta is such an inspiring producer and musician to work with, and he's creating mesmerizing rhythms you've never heard me sing to before." - Anjani Thomasanjani-music.comKatrin Roush is teaming up with legendary drummer and producer Jerry Marotta to record her fourth cd entitled "Frail to Fearless" to be released in late Summer, 2011. Jerry Marotta is best known for his work with Peter Gabriel, The Indigo Girls, Elvis Costello, Sarah McLaughlin, Sheryl Crowe and many more popular artists. (Marotta got his fellow band mates Tony Levin (John Lennon, King Crimson) and Bill Dillon (Joni Mitchell, Counting Crows) to back Katrin along with John Sebastian from the Loving Spoonful).katrinrocks.com"I just got back from a whirlwind trip centered around a week of daily recording with Jerry Marotta at his studio Dreamland, in Woodstock, NY. we tracked one song a day for five 13-hour days, and it was the most profound, intense musical collaboration i've ever experienced (aside from working with a certain artist that comes to mind). i finally feel like THIS is the record i have been trying to make since Blue Alert, but it took Jerry's fine sensibilities as a producer and his innate skill as a percussionist/drummer//bassist/vocalist to bring all these delicious grooves and concepts into play. working together was harmonious and so creative...and i can't wait to go back in August to finish up what we started and get this band on the road!" - Anjani Thomas "Jerry Marotta's work is iconic; whether as a drummer, producer, and composer, his cadence is mellifluous and distinct. It beckons one on a journey to explore the temporal and invisible worlds where harmony dwells."- Janice Chiang"The powerful, visceral drumming came from Jerry Marotta, who makes his game soundtrack debut on DF-BHD. He may be best known for his work with Peter Gabriel, both recording and touring, but he has also worked with Paul McCartney, the Indigo Girls, Elvis Costello, Tears for Fears, Hall & Oates, Carly Simon and dozens of others." -Russell Browerwww.novalogic.com"Jerry Rocks. What can you say? This guys wails on his kit like theyre cannons and plays some really cool shit to boot."-Trey Gunn"Jerry..What can I say? You are without a doubt the best drummer I've ever had the pleasure to work with. Thank you for playing with such heart and soul and for going strong those long hours. I consider all of you guys world class and I truly feel so lucky to have been able to be making this record with you. It would have been impossible without everyone's generosity and flexibility. I continue to hear and appreciate all sorts of brilliant subtle stuff you played as I listen back to these tracks."-Beth Neilsen Chapman"I've always enjoyed Jerry Marotta's drumming, he's just a monster, and I've always enjoyed what he did with Peter Gabriel and a host of other people."-Eric Johnson "Jerry will play with great strength when the music calls for it. Often we both gravitate to simple parts that have a similar weight to them, and maybe have some small element to make them unique." -Tony Levin "The final cover is Buffy Saint Marie's Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee which appears as both a live version and a studio version. The highlight of the live version is drummer Jerry Marotta singing a verse." -Review of Indigo Girls 1200 Curfews "Jerry Marotta is a phenomenal drummer and one of the most creative people I've ever met. The list of People he's recorded with-from the Indigo Girls to Peter Gabriel- reads like a who's-who of contemporary music. Check him out!" -Artie Traum"Aside from being one of the greatest 'feel' drummers of all time, Jerry has an astounding way of approaching the drum kit as a percussion orchestra. Each instrument has its own voice and is then integrated into the greater whole . Whether he's playing the drum set, the Taos set or his eclectic percussion set, his drumming is always unconventional and uniquely compositional."-Mike Visceglia "One by one, The Tony Levin Band took to the stage: Larry Fast on keys; Jerry Marotta on drums; Jesse Gress on guitar; Levin on basses & stick. They opened with a terrifying version of King Crimson's "Sleepless" with Levin using "funk fingers" - little wooden drumsticks - on his fingertips to pound out a percussive rhythm and Jerry Marotta delivering a great vocal. This lead into one of the highlights of the night - "Pieces Of The Sun" - a song that builds layer upon layer with brilliant interplay between all 4 band members. The show featured many fine Levin numbers as well as a crafty selection of cover songs. The old party standard "Tequila" was given a jazz-funk mutation; the Levin original "Ooze" had a strong Middle Eastern flavor with stunning guitar work from Jesse Gress; and there was a wonderful 1-2 punch of John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance" going straight into the Genesis classic "Back In NYC." The show was pretty flawless - just to hear the band tear through Larry Fast's brilliant "Phobos" would've been worth the price of admission on its own. My face still hurts from smiling so much!"Tony Levin Band concert reviewhttp://progsheet1.hypermart.net"Music is most broadly defined as sound organized in time. When Jerry's there, time, from minute shavings of beats to the grand scheme of the piece becomes a compelling force--not just an organizational framework. His ability to listen and his quest to reinvent the drums every time he sits down in the studio sets him apart. There is something in the way he hits a drum that loads it with emotion. More than just volume, there is a spirit in his drumming that shapes the music."-Scott Ainslie"In related news, there's this from Sun Palace. They have recently released a new CD entitled, Give Me A Perfect World. You'll be hard pressed to find a more soothing and enjoyable arrangement of music thanks to the talents of Tony Geballe and the angelic voice of Andriette Redmann who is lead vocalist and also plays drum loops and keyboards. Add with this the talents of Jerry Marotta on drums and backing vocals on 3 tracks and a host of other musicians, and there's definite reason for interest!"-Anna Maria Stjärnell "Jerry is very musical and he has a lot of talentoutside of the drum kit. He finds ways to bring that into his drumming, whether it is finding an unusual sounding kit (Taos drums) or a unique part. Whatever it is, he is always focused (like I try to be) on the composition and what will work best for it. On tour, I will have Jerry playing sax and guitar, maybe even electric guitar with funk fingers, so he'll be a busy guy on stage!"-Tony Levin "Longtime comrade Jerry Marotta snakes deep inside the bassists typically spare, pulsating grooves. Marotta's clever orchestration finds him folding huge-sounding toms into the usual kick-snare base." (Pieces of the Sun, Narada)- Michael Parillo Steve Gorn, Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta -From the Caves of the Iron Mountain(Papa Bear PBCD2, 1997, CD)Take a woodwind player and the early eighties rhythm section for Peter Gabriel (circa Security), put them together in a cave and youd be surprised what they come up with! The second release from King Crimson member Tony Levin's label is an adventure in recording within an abandoned mine complete with a lake, some water fowl and a crazy sound engineer on a boat!Marotta...his sensitivity to the surroundings gives the disk a cavernous depth. Exotic instrumentation is used on tracks such as Glass Beads which features the primary wood flute instrument, the bansari. From the Caves comes with an ornate package containing narrative liner notes which complete a list of all instrumentation by Levin. A companion video is available for purchase. In closing, the atmospheric textures created by this sympathetic trio may just have you searching out a deserted cave to experience just how well music can be created and interpreted in a not-so sterile recording environment.-Jeff Melton"Jerry is a session ace and producer who has performed with top artists such as Peter Gabriel,Paul McCartney, Ani DiFranco, Los Lobos, Elvis Costello and the Indigo Girls. He has been the musical producer on movie soundtracks including Boys on the Side, Dead Man Walking, Practical Magic, and Me, Myself and Irene. For the Tony Levin Band tour, Jerry plays an unusual setup consisting of a Yamaha drum kit, a pair of congas, his trusty Conn saxophone and a Garden Weasel!"-EMP LiveD.I.Y.Jerry Marotta drums PG 2nd album:Here's a track from Peter Gabriel that flows freely between lots of odd meters. Jerry Marotta's groove is solid and he deceptively keeps a steady quarter note pulse thoughout. Like some Beatles songs, you're not even aware that the meters are shifting because of how loose it's played. It's a good mid-tempo track to play along with if you want to work changing time signatures.-Jon Mattoxjonmattox.com
